My views on Karate: I think that
karate is a means to achieve eternal peace of one’s own self. It is
also a way of life. It tells us how one can achieve different levels
of perfection. The basic attacks; blocks, stances, etc constitute the
basic parts of life in metaphorical sense. From these we make the
katas, which may be said as the daily activities preformed by us, in
life. Initially we are not very good at it but later on we get more
perfect.
How I joined Karate: I have
joined Karate to create a balance between my power and control.
Initially I had much strength but a program on T.V. changed my views
about strength. I went to my present sensei and told him how much
power I had. He said that power was not everything and I refused to
believe him. He introduced me to another student who looked very thin
and weak but when I was instructed to punch him with all my strength,
I did and did not expect any type of counter but to my surprise, I was
given a lock so fast that I hardly even noticed it and in a split
second, was in pain. That incident changed my life. Now I have joined
karate and it has become a way of life. Now I have joined it and would
never choose to leave it. Then I also was determined that I should
also learn karate. I learnt that learning karate had its benefits. My
sensei Yashpal said that by learning karate your body would remain
well also the weak parts of the body would get internal exercise. It
teaches us that no matter how strong a human is, if he gets hit on the
venerable points, he may get damaged. He cannot make all parts of his
body hard. It is these points that lead us to a state of perfect
self-defense and peace. Thus my sensei had made me realize what life
was really about. One thing that I dislike is that people, on
seeing/knowing that a person is performing karate, automatically
assumes that he/she is doing it for self-defense and for harming
others. But one thing that should be known is that in karate people
are not taught to attack first but instead, how to defend by blocks.
The offense part comes later. Although the methods of karate may be
orthodox, but the same was with Indian culture. In the basic culture,
a master (guru) is considered of higher importance than god and here
also, sensei is our preacher, he shows us the path to peace and
perfection and in the way, becomes our master. Thus in the end I
consider karate a way of life and think that it is in one-way or
another an alternative life.
